Building Breakthrough BoardsFor A Diverse & Inclusive Canada

SHELL CANADA & B3 PARTNER TODEVELOP LEADERSHIP THROUGH COMMUNITY BUILDING

Diversity and inclusion strengthen Canada. As a country built by immigrants, Canada continues to welcome immigrants from all over the world with open arms. Through diversity and inclusion, we create a sense of genuine belonging and connectedness. Through diversity and inclusion, we build stronger communities and more successful businesses. We build a better Canada.

In celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary this year, the Canadian Government has launched a year-long “Power of Together” campaign. Through the Alliance 150 platform, the campaign brings together all the programs, events and projects that organizations, communities and individuals are launching from coast to coast to coast — to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial.

“I’m excited about this partnership with B3. In my experience, the most successful teams are built when diverse individuals with unique experiences choose to work together with a single purpose.”

– Michael Crothers, President & Country Chair, Shell Canada

As pronounced by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages: “Canada 150 represents a key moment for citizens, communities, non-governmental organizations and businesses to show their appreciation for this country and make their own contributions to it… This partnership of organizations speaks to what we can achieve when we work together to ensure that 2017 is a great success and a source of pride”.Passionate about making a positive difference in the world, a team of highly-driven entrepreneurs, led by lawyer Josephine Victoria Yam, founded Building Breakthrough Boards (B3) Canada. B3 is a purpose-driven social enterprise that promotes board diversity and inclusion through business and non-profit partnerships so that employees can share and develop their leadership skills in non-profit boards to positively change the world.

“Board diversity strengthens leadership. We believe that non-profits and corporations are forces for doing good. Working together, they can take on some of the most complex community aspirations and challenges. Together they build a better Canada.”

– Josephine Yam, CEO & Co-Founder, B3 Canada

B3 is a matchmaker between businesses and non-profits. Through its Board Matching & Training Program, B3 places and trains corporate employees to serve on non-profit boards through employer-supported volunteering. This innovative leadership & development program sharpens employees’ leadership skills and enhances employee engagement through community building. Through this program, corporate employees develop their talents to become dynamic leaders for a changing world. It also helps non-profit boards reflect the rich diversity of people who make up Canada.Ms. Yam explained the underlying rationale of B3: “Board diversity strengthens leadership. We believe that non-profits and corporations are forces for doing good. Working together, they can take on some of the most complex community aspirations and challenges. Together they build a better Canada.”Shell Canada believes that in a country as large and diverse as Canada, we are stronger, happier and more productive as a community when we respect, value and support one another. “I’m excited about this partnership with B3,” says Michael Crothers, Shell Canada President and Country Chair. “In my experience, the most successful teams are built when diverse individuals with unique experiences choose to work together with a single purpose.”

Shell has seen some success in having their employees serve on non-profit boards … and is taking this unique leadership development to the next level by working with B3.

By having opportunities for corporations like Shell and non-profits to come together and work on some of our country’s unique challenges in the areas of social development, community and people, that is a very powerful combination that can do great things for people across Canada. Shell has seen some success in having their employees serve on non-profit boards like the United Way and is taking this unique leadership development to the next level by working with B3. As we celebrate Canada 150, it is fitting to recognize the “Power of Together” through cross-sector collaboration. Together, the collaborative impact of businesses and non-profits knows no limits. Together they create inspired leadership. Together they create a stronger and more prosperous Canada.
